If you’re even thinking about getting a new job, take some time to craft a winning resume. Even if you don’t have a substantial job history yet, a first-class resume shows prospective employers the most important thing about you: that you are serious and professional. With that in mind, here are 5 essential tips to get started and also check out the latest templates for resume   


1. Do your research. Resume designs and templates are a Google search away. Review examples that are relevant to the field you’re in or wish to pursue. It’s a starting place to give you a feel for how others are presenting.  

2. Keep it succinct and relevant. Busy people are reviewing your resume, and no one likes fluff. Get to the point. Use only relevant details that would be meaningful to the person reviewing it. If you are responding to a job posting, read the description a few times and be sure to weave similar words into your resume. 

3. Keep an editable version. You will likely find job postings that are slightly outside of the field or position you’re pursuing — but that you’d still like a shot at. Edit your resume before submitting it to the new prospect. You can’t change the facts, but you can emphasize words and skills and a job objective that aligns better with the new opportunity. You may have to do this several times and wind up with several versions. That’s why you always want to keep a Word doc, not just a PDF.  

4. Follow professional design rules. Stick to 11-point font and a common resume typeface like Calibri. Keep the layout clean and open, with only the most key phrases or words bolded.  

5. Use a professional email address. You don’t want your resume coming from bunnyears513@yahoo or roadmonster41@aol. It’s always best to use your name (if available) — and even better if you have your own website, use the email attached to your domain, such as
